Math Test Study Guide

Concepts To Know:

1) Know how to add fractions that have the same size wholes.     3/5 +  1/5 =

2)  Know how to add fractions that have different size wholes.   2/5 + 1/2=

3)  Know how to write a story problem for an equation.  Examples.    1/3 - 1/8=   or 2/3+ 1/8 =

4)  Know how to use a fraction bar model or number line model to show what is happening mathematically.

5)  Know how to add and subtract mixed number using a fraction bar model or a number line.

Examples could include:    2  1/3 + 3 1/4  =  or   2 1/3 -  1 1/2 =  (the second problem is tricky since you will not be able to subtract the fractions once you make them into the same size wholes)

6)  I may give you a problem with an error in it and ask you to find the mistake.

7)  Be able to estimate.  About how big will your sum be for...        3 5/6  +   10/11 =  (be able to explain clearly)

Helpful Hints:  Study past homework by reworking problems.  All your past homework should already be stapled into your notebook.  If you having trouble...make an appointment with me to get help or find a study buddy.  Good luck!
