Homework

Vocabulary: Unit 6. Complete the first two pages by Wed. Finish last two pages by Friday.

Weekly Reader: Due Friday

Science: Do not forget to do your Weather Report

Math:

For those of you who are out of town here is an example: If I have 1.2 ÷ 4: This means "If I have 1.2 and I want to divide it into 4 equal groups, how many are in each group."

Next, estimate whether it is bigger or smaller than one. This would be smaller than one since 1.2 broken apart 4 times will be smaller than one.

Now draw a picture: I could build one flat and two longs for my model. Now trade flat for ten longs so that there are 12 longs for your picture. Put them into 4 groups and there will be 3 in longs each group. Since, three longs are in each group you have answered you question. The answer will be .3

Please do the following problems: For each one include.....

1) The question the equation is asking

2) Is it bigger than or smaller than one.

3) A picture using base 10 blocks.

4) Write the equation and your answer.

a) 1.2 ÷6 =

b) .6 ÷ 3 =

c) .16 ÷4=

d) 3.6 ÷6=

e) 2.4 ÷ 3=

All 5th Grade Parents.....

Dear parents,

Please check in with your child Thursday morning or afternoon to be sure they have their required supplies. Many students did not have glue sticks and scissors for Literacy work yesterday and today, which wastes a lot of valuable class time. On Thursday, students will begin using a red, blue, and black pen, for revising and editing their work. They will need these pens in their zippered pouch the rest of the year.

A copy of the 5th grade supply list was sent home the first week of school, but if you no longer have it, you can go to the EBS website/Parent Info/School Supplies/Wish List, and print another copy. Please let me know if you are unable to purchase these supplies, and I will provide them for your child.

Sincerely,
Lynn A. Moos

Quiz on Friday

You will have a quiz on Friday. Make sure to look over Tuesday's classwork that worked with cutting ribbon into pieces. Also know how to use patterns of division to divide decimals. For example

1.2 divided by .3 we could increase the divisor and dividend ten times by moving the decimal point one place to the right. Now I would have 12 divided by 3 which is 4 (I was able to make the divisor into a whole number.

Also, I can think to myself how many three tenths (.3) fit into one and two tenths(1.2). I know I can fit more than one...so I know my answer will be bigger than one

Know you try some: Think about the question the equation is asking and think about the patterns of division you could use.

12.6 divided by .2

54.24 divided by .04

3.42 divided by .3

Vocab. Unit 13 should by complete and be prepared for the test.

multiplication of decimals. Know how to estimate and find exact answer.

Geometry: line, ray, perpendicular lines This is on page 454 and 455 of your textbook

Finding the percent of a number. Know how to use number strings like we did in class.

homework

Vocabulary: page 105 unit 12

Math: Please use your 100 grids to find the fractions 1/6 and 1/9 . You will need to divide some of the squares into fractions.

Then write about the relationships you see. For example you might say : I know that 1/8 is half of 1/4. Since 1/4 is 25% I know that 1/8 is going to be 12.5% because 25% divided by 2 is 12.5.

This could be one example.

For those of you out of town: use the graph paper from my website to make 100 grids. This is an extension of Friday's lesson where we used the grids to find 1/8 and 3/8. Remember you will not to cut some of the squares into pieces. Remember how the to find 1/8 of the 100 grid we had to cut some squares in half.
