Concepts to know:
whole numbers:

• know how to write them in word form, standard form, and expanded form.

• know how to find the place value in a number and also be able to tell the value of the digit. For example: 576,984 The six is in the thousands place. The value of the 6 is 6,000

• know how to fill a customer order by recording a decimal. For example: 12 longs, 3 flats, and 12 cubes. (In this example you would also need to know how to make trades)    Another example  12 cubes, 3 longs, 6 flats

• Know how to build a decimal with bases 10 blocks. For example:  how would you build 1.098

• Know how to put a decimal into word form, expanded form, standard form and as a fraction

• Know how to compare and order decimals (You also need to be able to explain how you know which is bigger and which is smaller)

•Know how to find a decimal between a decimal. For example, is there a decimal between .23 and .24.... Also be able to explain how you know.

Geometry Test this Friday

Concepts to know:

What a polygon is and be able to recognize a shape that is a polygon and a shape that is not a polygon.

Know all the types of quadrilaterals and their properties

Know how to compare them.   (always, sometimes, never statements)

Know the definition of a polyhedron and how to name one.  For example...I have two triangles for my bases and three rectangles for lateral faces.  What shape am I?

Know how to count vertices, edges, and faces.  For example,  I am a prism.  My bottom base has 12 sides.  How many faces, edges, and vertices do I have?   Explain.

Understand how area and perimeter work when one is constant.   For example, I bought 25 feet of wood to make a square or rectangular garden.  What are the different gardens I could make? Which one would have the greatest area?  (Use whole numbers)

Rework through your class work.  Take some of the problems and change the numbers and then solve.

**I will create a letter on graph paper.   You will need to create the next letter based on my growth pattern.  Then explain how many tiles are in a 10 year old or any stage or age.  Finally, you will need to write about the pattern and write an algebraic equation.  Look over your notes and investigations.  Try this with other letters as well.

**The third problem will be a dot pattern to see if you can apply the same thinking you used in the first two problems.  You will have one homework assignment on this that you will be able to look at and study.

Know the following Concepts for this Friday's Math Test:

Know how to add fractions using an area model.

Know how to subtract two fractions less than one using an area model.

Know how to subtract a mixed number  and a fraction smaller than one using an area model.  You can also use a number line.

Find fractions of a whole.  For example,  What is 2/3 of 21......  (we did this with a set model)

Know that multiplying fractions can be seen as repeated addition.  For example.  2 X 2/5 means two groups of two fifth or   2/5 + 2/5.

Know how to multiply fractions smaller than one using fraction bars or an area model.  

Example:  John has 1/3 of a candy bar he gives his friend 1/4 of his share.  How much of the original candy bar does his friend have?

Know how to multiply a mixed number and a fraction.

Example:  A cooking recipe calls for 1 1/4 cups of sugar.  If you want to make a 1/3 of the recipe, how many cups of sugar do you need?

Know how to multiply two mixed numbers.

Example:  My bathroom is 3 1/2 by 4 1/3 feet.  Exactly how many tiles do I need?

A iPhone measures  1   1/5 by  2 1/2 .....What is the area of the iPhone?

Know how to divide fractions.

Example:  1/2 divided by 1/3............  What question is this asking?     Is the quotient bigger or smaller than one?   Create a model.

Concepts to know:

Fair Shares:   How do you share 5 cookies with 6 people?    How do you share 3 cookies with five people?   Check back in your notebook on this activity.

Fractions on a number line:  putting fractions in order on a number line and explaining what strategy you used.   (I am looking for you to use the 4 strategies we went over in class)   Read over your notes on this.

Equivalent Fractions:  Know how to make equivalent fractions using the fraction squares.


Decomposing a Fraction:   An example would be to take the number one and break it into 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8   hint:   Use your fraction bars and break one into as many fraction combinations as you can.  We did this in class the week we played fraction games.
